My Asus Eee PC

Placed an order for Asus Eee 4G Surf 7″ Micro Laptop PC. The Galaxy Black color model cost me $362.25 (incl. shipping). I could have saved few bucks if Amazon.com had this item in stock.

Purchased a (Crucial DDR2 2GB PC5300) memory module from Outpost.com to upgrade my Asus Eee PC when it arrives. I paid $54.11 (but will get back $30 through MIR). Less than $25 for 2 GB RAM for a laptop. Not bad.

Received ’shipping confirmation’ email from Amazon. The laptop is on its way by UPS and is scheduled for delivery on 2/25/2008.

When I got home from work today, the package was waiting for me at the door. Opened it immediately. Played for couple hours. Got on (home) wireless network without any issues (other than providing the WEP key). Updated BIOS and some of the software that came with the PC. Installed software to get to advanced mode. Took some pictures, too. It is quite late at night now. I will post the pictures here pretty soon. Other than a slight hum that seems to be coming from it, I am impressed with the PC, specially its size. (I expected it to not make any noise when running. It doesn’t have a spinning disk, you see. Need to surf around to see if the noise is unique to the one I got.)
This is what I got when I powered up the very first time:

When I switch to advanced desktop, without any customization, this is what I see:

The system came with only 512 MB RAM:
Memory before adding 2 GB memory module
    Opened the “cover” protecting memory:
Asus Eee PC (replacing memory 1/3)
The 512 MB RAM that came with the computer seen here:
Asus Eee PC (replacing memory 2/3)
Replaced the memory module (that came with Eee PC) with the 2 GB Module I purchased last week.
Asus Eee PC (replacing memory 3/3)
While the OS still sees only 1 GB, the performance is definitely better than what it was with 512 MB RAM.

Note to self: recompile kernel one of these days to make it aware of 2 GB RAM.

Posted pictures I took while unpacking the package to get to the computer. I have also posted some screenshots. All these can be seen in my Flickr set. Will describe them and also post some more soon.

Following this post, I have installed Ubuntu (on an 8GB, Class 6 SDHC card) on my Eee PC. Now it dual boots to Ubuntu and Xandros. Everything works fine—I even see all 2GB RAM is available—on Ubuntu except wifi. Need to look around to see a fix for this problem.

Got the wireless to work. After installing Ubuntu and then getting the available/necessary updates (except xserver-xorg-video-intel, which was messing up X), got http://eee-ubuntu-support.googlecode.com/files/eee-ubuntu-support_v0.7.tgz , installed it as described there. Then enabled Atheros Hardware Access Layer in System → Administration → Restricted Drivers Manager before rebooting. Signal strength for the same wireless in Ubuntu (1 bar) is much less than what I see in Xandros (4 bars). Wireless is working fine on both OSes, though.

Sold it on eBay for $390. Recouped whatever I spent on it. The main reason I got rid of it is because of the keyboard. The keys aren’t where they’re found on a regular keyboard. Now that the gotta-have-tiny-laptop itch has been scratched, I think I will wait for the next generation Eee PC or a similar one from another manufacturer (I hear Dell, HP, etc. are working on it.) Or, I will just get the ultra portable Lenovo X Series laptop.
